Oh, Tulum. You may have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, but it’s with good reason. The trendy eateries, spooky cenotes, and endless beaches have stolen a lot of hearts. A lot.
Tulum is sometimes referred to as the Bali of Mexico. This is due to the boho beach vibes, artful accommodations, and trendy vegan restaurants cropping up on every corner. Love it or hate it, you’ve got to experience Tulum at least once.
Tulum is on the Caribbean side of Mexico, meaning you should expect hot and humid tropical weather throughout the year. For all the ladies out there, that means planning for the humidity and heat. So what to pack for Tulum as far as outfits that are still cute but functional?
I’ve traveled this region of Mexico many times over the years and I’ve got you covered! Below I’m going to list some of my most recommended Tulum outfits and accessories for your ultimate packing list.

Clothing & Accessories:
Did you catch above where I said Tulum is like the Bali of Mexico?
What I mean by that is it is tropical with a bohemian vibe. Think hot steamy weather and laid back, casual dress.
The Tulum style is chic yet casual. This Tulum packing list will revolve around flowy skirts, beachy rompers, cute sandals and kimonos. Many people dress up a bit for swanky dinners but otherwise we are going for light and breezy.
Additionally, the hot tropical weather is pretty predictable year round. No matter what time of year you visit, the weather will hover between 80 and 90 degrees, though from June – October you may see some rain.
That means that this Tulum clothing list is applicable all year round. Let’s dive in.
- Two casual tank tops – two tank tops for beach use or vacation workouts. Two great examples are this beachy graphic tank or this lightweight fitted tank.
- Two “nicer” tank tops – Go as casual or as dressy as you prefer here! These are for walking around Tulum for smoothies and souvenirs. You could go for this backless crop top or a chic crochet option like this one.
- Two short sleeve shirts – You should always pack a couple of shirts that cover your shoulders, even for a hot beach destination like Tulum. They provide good sun protection midday. I recommend this flowy knotted option that is more interesting than a basic tee.
- One lightweight hoodie – Pack one very lightweight hooded sweatshirt or sweater. This is great to cover up if you are in air-conditioned restaurants or hotel rooms.
- One pair of shorts for the beach – Try to make this pair of shorts be double-duty. Pack a pair that is comfortable both for the beach and for working out. I prefer shorts like this, which are similar to what I’ve bought in Bali itself.
- One pair of shorts for exploring – This could be denim or linen. Basically, a pair that you would prefer to wear off the beach.
- Long flowy palazzo style pants – I highly recommend this style of long, loose flowy palazzo pants. If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably seen that I wear these types of pants all the time – but they are particularly excellent for beachy and hot, humid destinations.
- Two bathing suits – If you plan to spend multiple days at the beach, I highly recommend bringing two swimsuits. That way you can alternate every other day, letting the wet pair have a full day to dry out. My current favorite is part chic and part boho – and is perfect for your Tulum packing list. I packed that and also a white bikini, pictured above.
- Two pairs of leggings – The most comfortable, versatile bottom for flights, sleepwear, and workouts! You probably already own a pair, but if not, these basic leggings are great.
- One romper or playsuit – So easy to throw on over bathing suits! One thin, flowy romper is A MUST for Tulum.
- Sleepwear – don’t forget to pack whatever your preferred sleepwear might be.
- Underwear – This will depend on the length of your trip, but I typically would recommend packing around seven or eight pairs. I also recommend a mix of “normal” bras, bandeau, and sports bras.
- Flip Flops – one basic pair of flip flops for the beach and/or showers
- Trekking sandals – I talk a lot about my favorite trekking sandals, but I swear these have never let me down! They’ve traveled across six continents with me over the years and they were very useful when renting a bike or hiking to cenotes.
- Hat – I recently had to replace my long-time favorite hat, and I must admit – the bar was high. I ended up going with this black panama hat, and I will tell you exactly why I like it. One, it has adjustable Velcro hidden inside the brim for a good fit (even on a windy day). As a bonus, it is foldable and crushable, which makes packing a breeze. You’re welcome!
- Sunglasses
- One Kimono – for covering up on the beach or even in the city. I recommend lightweight chiffon like this, as it breathes and will dry quickly if worn on the beach.
- Scarf / Sarong – Bring this if you know you will be in air-conditioned environments, get cold on planes, or to use as an alternate beach coverup. I have this one in a few colors, and I love it. It is breezy and lightweight, and a cherry on top for all Tulum outfits.
- Jewelry – optional.
- Small cross-body bag – I highly recommend this bag from Pacsafe. There is no denying that crime has gone up in Tulum in the past few years. Petty theft and robberies can happen. This bag gives me peace of mind with a theft-proof strap, locking zippers, and RFID protection. I have had great luck with this brand and consider it to be an excellent investment.
Toiletries:
The TSA will limit how much liquid you can bring in your carry-on bag to 3.4 oz (100ml) bottles, maximum. Think strategically about what items you actually need and what might be provided on site (soap, shampoo, etc). Use travel sized bottles to carry the liquids that make the cut.
- Toothpaste & Toothbrush
- Shampoo & Conditioner
- Sunscreen – This is probably obvious, but you will need to pack some sunscreen. Since Tulum is on the ocean, you should bring an all-natural or reef-friendly sunscreen to protect the beautiful Caribbean wildlife.
- Soap
- Deodorant
- Brush or Comb
- Face wash
- Hand Sanitizer
- Shaving supplies
- Tissues
- Moisturizer
- Feminine hygiene items
- Lip Balm (with SPF)
- Face Wipes or Makeup Remover – These cucumber wipes will leave you refreshed after a long day of sweating on the beach.
- Travel First Aid Kit – These are so tiny and packable, they barely take up any space in your luggage. If you plan on any hiking or adventure activities, you don’t want to skip this item. I also recommend using this at home if you hike!
- Medications & Prescriptions – Don’t forget these as they can be tough to find abroad.
- Hair Styling Tools if needed
Gear for your Tulum Packing List:
What gear you need to bring is dependent on the person.
If you plan to work while you travel, you will probably need your laptop. If not, don’t weigh yourself down. Plus, if you’re alone, you may need more reading materials whereas if you’re in a group, maybe some beach games instead.
So again, modify the items below as you like, but this is a good place to start.
- Dry Bag – If you plan to snorkel, be on a boat, or expect rain, I highly packing a dry bag like this. It comes comes in cute designs, and has a strap for carrying. It even has a phone dry bag thrown in. You’ll thank me later!
- One travel beach towel – I always pack this exact one for beaches, camping, and more. It barely takes up any room in your suitcase but is super absorbent. In fact, I like it so much that I gifted one to several family members.
- Cameras & Chargers – For beach destinations, waterproof action cameras can’t be beat!
- Books or e-books
- Phone & Charger
- Earbuds or headphones (great for the flight) – I recently purchased these noise canceling headphones and let me tell you – I will be bringing these on every loud flight in my foreseeable future.
- Credit Cards / Wallet / Cash – see my in depth post on keeping money safe while you travel for tons of helpful suggestions that I swear by!
- Laptop & Charger if needed
- Any other beach items that will make your trip better. Example: bluetooth speakers, small cooler, etc.
