5 Weekend in Oman Essentials
✅ A breathable and lightweight scarf
✅ A loose kimono for modesty
✅ Rugged trekking sandals for hiking or wadis
✅ A long flowy skirt for comfort and cover.
✅ A Muscat one day tour to get your bearings
Day 1: Discovering Muscat – The Heart of Oman
Your weekend in Oman itinerary begins in Muscat, whether you arrive by flight or are driving to Muscat from Dubai (or elsewhere.)
This capital city is known for its charming blend of modernity and tradition. Muscat offers a variety of attractions and is the perfect place to start your trip.
Pro Tip: If you don’t plan on renting a car, you can see all of the sights listed below on a highly rated Muscat city tour. It’s the best way to get your bearings and cover the most ground in a short and well-planned route. BOOK YOUR MUSCAT CITY TOUR HERE!
Morning: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
Begin your morning with a visit to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the largest and most impressive mosques in the world.
The architecture is simply breathtaking, with its intricate carvings, plush carpet, and massive arches. At the time of writing, the mosque is currently open to non-Muslim visitors from 8 AM to 11 AM. As always, check the hours before visiting.
Pro Tip: Note that a strict dress code is enforced at the mosque. Women should wear full-length flowy pants or skirts and will need arms fully covered, as well as a head scarf. Be sure to check out my post on what to wear in Oman for full details.
(If you book the tour above, verify with the operator about entry. You can always re-order the activities of each day to accommodate entry to the Mosque. It is so worth the visit!)
Next Up: Bait Al Zubair and Al Alem Palace
Bait Al Zubair showcases exhibits about the cultural history of Oman, so this is the place to visit if you want to learn. Examples of clothing, jewelry, and accessories worn by women and men are shown, and the colors and detailing are amazing.
Additional weaponry and artifacts are also displayed.
Next, take a quick drive-by of the small yet colorful Al Alem Palace, located just across from the Museum. Also known as the “Flag Palace”, this building is the ceremonial residence of the Sultan of Oman.
It was built in 1972, and is a great example of modern Islamic architecture, nestled within Old Muscat.
Midday: Muttrah Souq & Corniche
Spend the afternoon wandering the alleyways of the Muttrah Souq, one of the oldest traditional markets in Oman. Here you’ll find spices, jewelry, incense, scarves, and handmade Omani crafts. It’s a fun place!
You can also grab some dried fruits or even a falafel for a quick bite to eat. Then, enjoy a stroll along the Muttrah Corniche, which offers stunning views of the sea and mountains. It’s a perfect spot to soak in some fresh air.
Pro Tip: Once again, all of the above sights can be seen on this Muscat City Tour. If you have a rental car, you can easily visit these on your own. But if driving in Oman sound like a headache, book the tour. 🙂
Evening: Sunset at Al Mouj
For dinner, head to Al Mouj, an upscale oceanfront area with great restaurants and stunning sunset views. Try some local dishes as the sun begins to set, throwing colorful pinks and reds across the sky.
After dinner, take a stroll along the promenade to end the first of your three days in Oman.
Day 2: Adventure in Oman’s Outdoors
Oman’s rugged terrain and natural beauty make it perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. In fact, this is one of the main reasons I first fell in love with Oman, and keep coming back!
For your second day in Oman, you will venture outside Muscat for a taste of the unreal nature.
Pro Tip: In my opinion, Wadi Shab is a must-see. It equal parts adventure and beauty! If you are not planning to drive, you are in luck – there is an excellent day tour including transportation to and from both Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole. BOOK YOUR WADI TOUR HERE!
Morning & Afternoon: Wadi Shab’s Crystal Clear Waters
Wadi Shab is becoming very well known these days, and for good reason.
This stunning valley is home to blue crystal-clear pools and waterfalls, tumbling over towering rocks, which are perfect for a refreshing swim.
First, you will cross a small river by boat (the cost is 1-2 Omani Riyal.) Then, hike along the rocks for about 40 minutes to discover natural springs flowing between the rocks.
It will take around 1 hour 45 minutes to reach Wadi Shab, plus the hike and boat ride each way – so this really is an all-day adventure! I recommend packing a boxed lunch to enjoy at your leisure in the Wadi.
Pro Tip: Ladies, be sure to read my article on traveling Oman as a woman for tips on visiting wadis, mosques, and more.
Afternoon & Evening: Bimmah Sinkhole and Dinner
On the way back, don’t forget to make a stop at the Bimmah Sinkhole, a natural geological formation, where you can swim in the turquoise waters. If possible, make sure to reach Bimmah Sinkhole before sunset.
Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole combined is one of my most favorite day trips from Muscat. You can’t miss it!
Afterwards, you will pass many roadside restaurants on your way back toward the city. Feel free to stop for dinner, or wait until you reach the city again.
Day 3: Hidden Gems or History
For your last day in Oman, you can choose your own adventure depending on if you want a city-day or another nature-day. Here are my top 3 options to finish off your weekend itinerary in Oman!
1. Explore the Desert Beauty of Wahiba Sands
Venturing out into the vast and endless Wahiba Sands is a true desert experience. This expansive desert landscape is full of adventures like dune bashing, camel treks, and unbelievable sunsets
If you love the tranquility of the desert and the chance to disconnect, Wahiba Sands is the perfect spot to visit. Note that, if you have been to Liwa Desert in the UAE, you can probably skip this and feel okay!

If you are more interested in wandering Oman’s souqs and learning more of the history here, then a trip to Nizwa Fort, one of the country’s most iconic historical landmarks, will do the trick.
This 17th-century fort offers a detailed glimpse back into the lives of the inhabitants here. Explore a cultural timeline in Oman and see how it compares to other regions around the world. And, climb the many winding stairways for the surrounding panoramic views.

3. Unwind on the Pristine Dayminiat Islands
If you’re a true mermaid and didn’t get enough swim and sun in at Wadi Shab, then consider a trip to the Dayminiat Islands.
These small, uninhabited islands are known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear ocean waters, and excellent snorkeling opportunities. This area reminds me greatly of Musandam, Oman to the north – it is so beautiful!
It’s a great way to unwind, enjoy some peaceful time by the sea, and explore the vibrant marine life of Oman.
