The History of Pigeon Towers in Doha (and Beyond)
Pigeon Towers can be found in various shapes and sizes all over the Middle East. They are believed to have been introduced by Persian and Indian settlers who brought the practice of pigeon raising with them upon relocating in the region.
Dating back to the Middle Ages, these iconic structures are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also served an important purpose. Pigeon Towers were primarily used by farmers.
They are one of the oldest methods of raising birds and collecting fertilizer, which was used on crops in Qatar and the neighboring countries. Additionally, their feathers were used for pillows and the pigeons themselves were sometimes used for meat.
The large cylindrical towers were built from clay, mud, and wood, though the exact design and detailing differs from country to country. Each architectural variation was created to adapt to the specific conditions of the location, such as weather and climate.
Pigeon Towers can often be found in historic forts and castles, in the typical conical and domed shapes. They were a symbol of wealth and status. The more towers a family had built, the more affluent they were.
As the demand for pigeon meat and fertilizer has decreased, many these towers have fallen into ruin or disrepair. However, others have been preserved as cultural landmark, like the Pigeon towers in Doha’s Katara Village.
Where are the Pigeon Towers in Doha?
Doha’s Pigeon Towers are found within the Katara Cultural Village. This is one of my favorite places to visit in Doha, due to the unique architecture, intricate tiling, and opportunities for education.
Katara Village is roughly 20 minutes north of the Souq Waqif area.
How To Get There
Depending on where you are staying in Doha, you have four main options for transportation to the Pigeon Towers.
First and foremost, you can opt for booking a Doha city tour – particularly if it is your first visit to Qatar. It will help you get your bearings and introduce you to areas that you may not have found solo.
This tour in particular stops at the Katara Cultural Village, where you can see the gorgeous Pigeon Towers as well as the Katara Mosque, the Amphitheatre, and the Gold Mosque. It also features a traditional dhow boat cruise, too.. BOOK YOUR TOUR HERE!
Second, you can take Doha’s Metro system from many points in the city. The Metro is clean and easy to understand – not to mention quite affordable. Read more about using the Metro system in this article.
Third, you can opt for taking an Uber, which is fairly cheap as well. Check out my favorite travel apps here.

Iconic Features of the Pigeon Towers
Pigeon Towers typically stand in even columns with impressive domes. They are often covered in decorative relief engravings in geometric patterns and feature sticks for perches that the birds can land on.
The Pigeon Towers in Doha are no exception. They are a beautiful trio, a monument to the past, and still have countless pigeons that land here each and every day.
These towers are an iconic symbol of the past that are incredibly beautiful, still today.
