Planning a trip to Kuwait but need to keep things on a budget? Or, are you wondering, is Kuwait expensive for tourists? Then this guide is for you!
Famous for its sunny skies, impressive architecture, and chaotic history, Kuwait has been gaining popularity as an up-and-coming tourist destination.
And whether you plan to visit Kuwait for one week or just one day, it is perfectly reasonable to not want to spend an arm and a leg on food, accommodations, and tours.
But, Kuwait is not known for being a very budget-friendly destination. The currency is strong – the strongest in the world, in fact – and at first glance, prices are steep.
I have been traveling the Gulf extensively for over ten years now, and here I will cover my best money-saving tips for Kuwait. Let’s dive right in.
Prices in Kuwait: Costs and Tips
Is Kuwait an expensive destination? The short answer is – it certainly can be. On my first visit to Kuwait, I had thankfully done my research and come prepared.
Home to the worlds strongest currency, you will find that US dollars don’t stretch as far here as you may be used to.
The first and most important thing to know about Kuwait’s currency, the Kuwaiti Dinar, is that the current exchange rate sits at 1 Kuwaiti Dinar to $3.27 United States Dollar.
That means that anything displaying an 8KWD price tag actually equals more than $26USD. And anything marked 25KWD is actually over $81USD. So don’t let the low numbers fool you!
Here is how to stretch your dollar the farthest in the four areas that affect tourists the most: accommodations, tours, transportation, and food.
1) Cost of accommodations in Kuwait.
Hotel prices in Kuwait can vary widely depending on factors like the location, time of year, and the level of luxury you’re seeking. On average, you might find:
- Budget Hotels: Around $30 to $60 per night. These are typically basic accommodations with fewer amenities, but can still be clean and classy.
- Mid-Range Hotels: $60 to $150 per night. These often offer more comfort, better locations, and additional facilities like gyms, pools, and restaurants.
- Luxury Hotels: $150 to $300+ per night. Picture high-end hotels in prime locations with premium services and amenities.
Pro Tip: I stayed in this perfectly located hotel near Souq Al Mubarikiya, Sadu House, Grand Mosque, and more. This was my home base during my entire visit, and when I go back next, I will stay here again. I also booked early and scored a rate under $40 USD per night. CHECK HOTEL PRICES HERE!
Hotel prices in Kuwait can fluctuate based on promotions, seasonality, and how far in advance you book. If you’re planning a trip, it’s a good idea to book your room as early as possible for the best deals.
2) Attractions and tours in Kuwait.
Some tours in Kuwait will carry a high price-tag, and there won’t be much you can do about it. For example, a fully guided tour to Failaka Island is pricey, full stop.
However, there are plenty of things to do in Kuwait that won’t break the bank.
The Grand Mosque has free entry – just be careful to avoid visiting during prayer times. The Kuwait Towers are one of the most well-known tourist spots – and they only cost 3 Kuwaiti Dinar.
Pro Tip: I’ve mentioned it in several other blog posts, but I got a great deal on an excellent Kuwait tour that took me all around the country. From the souqs to the desert to the towers and parks, you will see so much in one day! BOOK YOUR TOUR HERE!
A few of my top recommendations are:
- Kuwait Towers
- Sadu House
- Souq Al Mubarakiya
- The Grand Mosque
- The Mirror House
Note that many of the places mentioned above are stops on the highlighted tour above. So it is a great way to visit a lot in a short timeframe.
3) Transportation in Kuwait.
Taxis are the most common and convenient way to get around, and your hotel can probably arrange transport from the airport. But, for multiple sightseeing trips, taxis can add up quickly.
On my visit, I often used Careem, the Middle Eastern ride-hailing service and one of my favorite travel apps. Careem is often cheaper and makes your life much easier as you can pay by credit card.
Public buses are also an option for travelers looking to save money. None of the bus timetables matched up with my plans though, so I did not personally use it.
4) Food and dining costs in Kuwait.
Dining out in Kuwait can range from high-end restaurants to more affordable local eateries.
For anyone looking to splurge, consider dining at one of the restaurants within the Kuwait Towers. Horizon Restaurant, for example, offers a varied buffet of Middle Eastern and international cuisine. It operates daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and dinner will cost adults 16KWD, or $52USD.
For budget-conscious travelers, I highly recommend grabbing a bite at Souq Al Mubarakiya. You’ll find delicious local foods at incredibly low prices. For instance, I enjoyed a filling falafel meal and a tasty fatayer for just $1 USD each.
Quick Tips for Budget Travelers in Kuwait
- Plan Ahead – The number one reason I got a great price for my clean and perfectly located hotel in Kuwait was from booking in advance. Booking as soon as you know your trip dates can save you quite a bit of cash.
- Location, Location, Location – Pick a hotel walking distance of many of the sights you want to see. I did exactly this and couldn’t have been happier. It cut down on transportation costs and allowed me lots of freedom! And yes, Kuwait is very safe for tourists, even for solo females.
- Eat Like a Local – I tend to avoid “tourist trap” style restaurants and instead dine where the locals do. Souq Al Mubarakiya is not only a local’s hangout, but also a foodie’s paradise on a budget.
- Use Technology – Apps like Careem can help you save on transportation costs. Additionally, use travel apps to find discounts on attractions and activities.
- Explore Free and Low Fee Attractions – There is plenty to see in Kuwait on a budget, such as the Kuwait Towers, various museums, and beautiful parks. You can also do what I did and book this Kuwait tour for a low price, which stops at many of the stops I recommend.
- Know the Exchange Rate -Keep in mind that Kuwait has the strongest currency in the world. For every 1KWD, it will cost you $3.27USD. Remember to times all prices by approximately 3 so you don’t go over budget.
