This Qatar travel guide has all the resources to set you up for a fun and successful trip!
Qatar, often overshadowed by its neighbors, is a worthy place for a standalone vacation. It has the perfect blend of modern city amenities, wild and rugged nature, and traditional souks and mosques to explore.
Doha, the capital, is a well-designed city with easy public transportation options. It sits on the east coast of the country, bordered by the blue waters of the Persian Gulf. Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world, yet it doesn’t feel perfectly manicured or artificial.
If you are planning to travel to Qatar, this guide will lay out all the basics so that you can explore with ease! Let’s dive in.
When is the Best Time to Visit Qatar?
Qatar, much like the other Gulf countries, has a harsh desert climate.
For the best weather, plan your visit between October and April. Temperatures will be pleasant yet warm, and the sun will be bright. There may be a slight chill on winter mornings, but daytime is perfectly pleasant.
If you want to spend a lot of time outdoors, this is the time to visit.
Summers are intense here. Triple digits are the norm. However, Qatar is blessed with so much coastline that the beach is an easy and welcome respite.
In terms of tourists, summer is the low season. Therefore, lower prices can often be found.
Language: What Language Do They Speak in Qatar?
The official language of Qatar is Arabic. However, English is widely spoken, especially within the tourism sector.
Useful Phrases:
- ‘Hello’ and ‘Thank You’ in Arabic: “Assalam Alaikum” – pronounced ah-sa-lam al-eye-kum, and :Shukran” – pronounced shoo-kron.
Currency in Qatar
The currency in Qatar is the Qatari Riyal, or QAR (check current conversion rates here.)
Is the US Dollar accepted in Qatar?
No, the US Dollar, nor the Euro for that matter, are widely accepted in Qatar. However, both currencies are ideal for exchanging money if needed.

Transportation in Qatar
Below is a summary of transportation options in and to Qatar.
Getting There: International visitors will most likely arrive at the Hamad International Airport. (DOH). Located east of the capital, this airport replaced the former Doha International Airport (so be careful when using maps and planning routes!)
Doha’s airport is large and modern, similar to Dubai’s airport. It is home to Qatar’s flagship carrier, Qatar Airways, which has always provided a great flying experience.
Getting Around: Generally, most tourists opt to book a tour rather than renting a car, though driving is easy and orderly in Qatar.
Doha has an easily navigable Metro system for getting around the city. Read all about how to use it in this guide.
Uber is also available in Doha and I highly recommend using it over taxis when possible.
