The Perfect Trekking in Nepal Packing List
This list will cover all of the packing essentials for any trek in Nepal, such as the famous Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit.
1. The Best Backpack for You
The number one item on this trekking in Nepal packing list is a good backpack, hands down.
On any multi-day hike, it is critically important to have a comfortable backpack with a good fit for your body. Since you are carrying a lot of gear over long periods of time, it also needs to be lightweight and have lots of useful compartments.
My very first backpack that I bought for Southeast Asia was a Gregory pack, and I still love that bag immensely. I have since bought a smaller version and have a great suggestion for the men out there, too.
Pro Tip: Ladies, if you are on a longer trek or need to pack for a larger trip around Nepal, you will want to go with the Gregory Maven 55. If you are a master-packer or don’t need much extra gear, downsize to the Gregory Jade 38. More details on both packs below!
Gregory Women’s Maven 55
If you need a lot of room, this Gregory Maven 55 is for you! It is super comfy for such a big pack because the hip and shoulder straps are padded. A raincover is included.
This is a great choice for your Nepal trekking packing list, especially if you have additional gear for visiting other parts of Nepal. GET YOUR MAVEN PACK HERE!
Gregory Women’s Jade 38
This Gregory Jade 38 is my current favorite pack, but only if you are a serious light packer or are booking a shorter trek!
This pack is moisture wicking and comes with a handy raincover to keep your gear dry. Bonus, the front pocket is super useful. GET YOUR JADE PACK HERE!
Gregory Men’s Zulu 55
Men, this Gregory Zulu 55 pack is for you! The Zulu pack is known for being extra-breathable and moisture-wicking, too. It’s large enough to fit all the gear you need without weighing you down.
While I haven’t used this bag due to not being a man, haha, I heard great reviews from multiple male travelers. GET YOUR ZULU PACK HERE!
Let me explain further exactly why the above backpacks are great choices on what to pack for trekking in Nepal.
Here are some key features you will definitely want in a trekking backpack:
- Adjustable shoulder and waist straps so you can find a comfortable fit. When wearing a pack for days, you will likely need to adjust day to day.
- Water bottle pockets on both sides. If you are like me, you’ll be drinking a lot of water. You’ll need two high quality water bottles to stay hydrated on the trek. (This bad boy is my recommendation because it has a built in straw for easy drinking / no spilling. And, it keeps your beverage cold!)
- Separate bottom compartment with easy access to your sleeping bag.
- Exterior trekking pole holders for easy on-and-off usage.
- A separate compartment for items you need quick access to, like electrolyte tabs or body wipes. Those Gregory bags all have easy to access exterior pockets.

2. Comfortable, Lightweight Hiking Shoes
When trekking in Nepal, expect to be on your feet for several hours each day. In my experience, the minimum is around three hours and the maximum can be over ten hours!
Because of this, it is absolutely essential to find the most comfortable and lightweight shoes to add to your Nepal trekking packing list. And, I’ve got some suggestions.
It is well worth your money to invest in some sturdy hiking boots due to the icy glaciers, snow, and changing conditions that you will encounter. Both the different elevations and seasons in Nepal bring about many varying conditions.
I am a huge fan of Columbia products for winter conditions, as you’ll see later in this list. But I am including not only my tried and true Columbia boots, but additional options, too.
Women’s Columbia Crestwood Waterproof Boots
The Columbia Crestwood Boots offer superior protection against the elements! Crafted with lightweight, waterproof materials, these shoes are designed to keep your feet dry and comfortable.
Thanks to their waterproof technology and breathable design, these are a great pick for trekking in Nepal. GET YOUR COLUMBIA BOOTS HERE!
KEEN Women’s Mid Waterproof Boots
These mid-height KEEN Waterproof Boots are another excellent choice! They keep water out and make hiking easy with all-terrain soles.
The mid-height provides great ankle support, too, for uphill days. GET YOUR KEEN BOOTS HERE!
Columbia Men’s Mid Waterproof Hiking Shoe
I have a great men’s shoe option, too – the Columbia Men’s Redmond Shoe is an excellent waterproof choice.
This durable and lightweight hiking boot is designed for long days on the trail. They easily handle both rain and snow. GET YOUR COLUMBIA HIKING SHOES HERE!
Rugged Trekking Sandals
First and foremost, I love my Keen trekking sandals. They came with me to Nepal just as they have across countless other countries.
The grip is great, the open panels let your feet breathe, and they have closed toes for added protection. GET YOUR TREKKING SANDALS HERE!
Pro Tip: Note that I recommend packing the trekking sandals if you are spending time trekking at lower elevations, or when the weather is warmer. Check about the seasons in Nepal for more info. Additionally, I found them useful for my Chitwan National Park safari, so if you’re visiting more of Nepal, you’ll likely want these. If none of those apply, you can skip them.
When considering what shoes to buy for either an Annapurna Circuit packing list or Everest Base Camp packing list, consider the following.
- Waterproof material is key. Nothing makes me grumpier than wet feet for days.
- Ankle support is a non-negotiable. Some days you’ll be trekking up rocks and others you’ll be headed downhill on a slippery surface.
- Plan for a little extra toe space in the front of your boots because you’ll likely wear thick wool socks along your trek.
- Always always always break your shoes in before the trip if possible. Nothing is worse than breaking in new shoes on a multi-day hike.
3. Outer Layers and Jackets
You’ll need to pack a couple of different jackets for the varying conditions you are likely to encounter. In my opinion, no Nepal trekking packing list is complete without at least a couple of jackets and outerwear options.
As previously mentioned, the different elevations and seasons in Nepal make relying on one single jacket for your whole trip highly unlikely. You will need an insulated outer shell jacket and a fleece jacket, and I have one other personal favorite linked below.
Pro Tip: If you need to buy both the outer shell and the fleece, purchase the Columbia Outer Shell below because it comes with both! The fleece zips on or you can wear it solo. However, if you already have an outer shell, then just get the fleece jacket option by itself.
A Columbia Insulated Outer Shell
This Columbia women’s winter coat is the ultimate 3-in-1 design. It features a waterproof outer shell and a warm inner fleece layer that can be worn both separately or zipped together for maximum warmth.
If you need both layers anyways, definitely grab this combo deal. GET YOUR COLUMBIA JACKET HERE!
A Warm Comfy Fleece Jacket
This Osito Full Zip Fleece will keep you so incredibly warm on your trek! You can wear it by itself or under your outer shell in the coldest of climates.
I prefer the full zip option over the pullover because it is much easier to put on and take off on the trail as the temps change. GET YOUR FLEECE JACKET HERE!
33,000ft Packable Rain Jacket
This lightweight packable rain jacket is the last jacket I recommend packing. It folds up into a tiny softball sized pouch for easy stashing, too!
While I’ve had cheaper rain shell jackets, this one is a winner for me because it has multiple pockets and hood adjusters. GET YOUR RAIN JACKET HERE!
4. Moisture Wicking Top Layers
On any of the many beautiful treks in Nepal, it is ideal to wear a shirt that wicks up sweat and moisture to keep your body cool and dry. Luckily, these types of shirts are pretty easy to find and won’t break the bank.
Pro Tip: No matter the length of your trek, I only recommend one of each of the following items, or two max. You can wash them as you go and let them dry overnight to cut down on too much gear.
Lades – add one (or two) of the following items to your Nepal trekking gear list, stat!
Under Armour Women’s Tank Top
This super soft Under Armour tank wicks sweat and dries fast! It is perfect for hot sunny days, lower elevations, or for sleeping.
What I love most about it is that its lightweight and has a lot of stretch to allow for a full range of motion on the trail. GET YOUR MOISTURE WICKING TANK HERE!
Columbia Women’s Sun Trek Tee
This lightweight moisture-wicking top is awesome because it has built-in UPF 50 sun protection. It is perfect for sunny days and higher elevations, where the sun is stronger!
I also love the wide range of fun and bright colors that it comes in. So you will be looking great while preventing sunburn and skin damage. GET YOUR SUN TREK TEE HERE!
Under Armour Women’s Long-Sleeve T-Shirt
Lastly, you will absolutely need a warmer layer on every single trek in Nepal. Try this Under Armour long sleeve tee. It is moisture-wicking and quick-drying, and has 4-way stretch!
The pinhole mesh delivers superior breathability as you hike without being see through. GET YOUR LONG SLEEVE LAYER HERE!
5. Comfortable Hiking Leggings & Shorts
Comfort is the name of the game when it comes to trekking pants, especially in Nepal. Since your hiking days are long, you want something that will be warm and comfy for hours on end.
For me, that means thick and stretchy leggings are ideal. I simply prefer the mobility of leggings over zip and khaki type pants. And, when you grab a thicker pair, they’ll keep you warm, too.
Pro Tip: choose earth-tone colors for your leggings if you plan to go on safari in Chitwan while in Nepal. Then, they can serve double-duty on your trip!
THE GYM PEOPLE Workout Leggings
These workout and hiking leggings are nice and thick, and they won’t break the bank, either!
They’ve got a handy pocket, perfect for your phone or mp3 player. These thick and stretchy pants are some of my go-to leggings. GET YOUR LEGGINGS HERE!
Lightweight Hiking Athletic Shorts
In lower elevations, you might prefer to wear shorts on your trek. I suggest these comfy drawstring waist hiking shorts which have several pockets for carrying phones, maps and snacks if needed!
One quick note, if you expect cold temperature on your whole trek, skip them. Otherwise, GET YOUR SHORTS HERE!
6. Accessories & Underwear
These are important enough to get their own section here. The correct socks, underwear and accessories can really make or break your trek.
Fleece Lined Hat, Gloves, and Neck Warmer Set
Stash this combo set in your pack because the higher you get in elevation, the more you will need them! These fleece-lined gloves, hat, and neck warmer will keep you toasty.
I have these in purple and they’ve traveled all over the world with me. GET YOUR FLEECE LINED SET HERE!
Smartwool Women’s Performance Hike Socks
These Smartwool socks keep you warm and dry in any weather condition. They are stretchy and comfortable, too.
Another great feature for trekking? They are fitted enough that you don’t need to worry about them slipping off of your heel and down your boot. Win! GET YOUR SMARTWOOL SOCKS HERE!
Women’s Thick Knit Merino Wool Socks
I only recommend a total of three wool socks to wash and rotate between on your trek. This thick wool multi-pack is a good option.
You can choose between two- or three-packs in a few different color combinations, too. GET YOUR SOCKS HERE!
Quick Dry Underwear
These microfiber moisture-wicking multi pack of underwear can’t be beat! I recommend packing six or seven pairs, depending on how long your trek is.
Again, you will simply wash and re-wear, so quick dry is key. GET YOUR MULTI-PACK HERE!
The LULULEMON Energy Bra
While I don’t think you need to spend a ton of money, having two really great sports bras for trekking is a must. Enter, LULULEMON’s Energy Bra.
It has great support and is specifically designed for athletics – and it shows! Wash and swap as you trek. GET YOUR SPORTS BRAS HERE!
7. Nepal Trekking Essentials List: Gear and Gadgets
From trekking poles to camera gear, here is everything “technical” that you just should not trek Nepal without!
Black Diamond Outdoor Head Torch
This high-powered headlamp is such a great and reasonably priced investment! A headlamp is so useful for getting situated and organized after dark.
Whether you leave before sunrise or end up on the trail after sundown, longer than intended, this will save you. GET YOUR HEADLAMP HERE!
Trekking Poles
I must admit I undervalued trekking poles prior to visiting Nepal. They were not an item I’d ever considered purchasing.
When trekking in Nepal, packing these will help you take the weight off of your knees and feet as you ascend (and descend) which can be invaluable. Bonus, these ones are ultralight and collapsible. GET QUALITY TREKKING POLES HERE!
A Waterproof Action Camera
You are definitely going to want to document your trek with a waterproof action camera in Nepal. The scenery is just out of this world.
And, you never know what elements like rain or snow you might come across. GET YOUR ACTION CAMERA HERE!
Microspikes
I bought these microspikes years ago for GLACIER hiking in Iceland, – and I am so glad that I did! They came in very useful in Nepal!
You’ll be crossing varied terrain and these spikes help so much on frozen ground, whether it be dirt or ice. Don’t skip them! GET YOUR MICROSPIKES HERE!
A High Quality Sleeping Bag
You’re going to need a high quality sleeping bag capable of keeping you warm even in freezing temps. This is useful not only outdoors, but also in cold guesthouses as a bonus layer of heat.
The mummy-shaped design gives you a “tucked-in” feeling and holds heat against your body better. GET YOUR SLEEPING BAG HERE!
A Quick Dry Towel
I love carrying a quick dry towel with me for any camping, hiking, and hostel situation. A typical bath towel can’t even compare.
The guesthouses and teahouses you find will often have a gas-powered shower and you will want one of these towels handy. They are lightweight and super fast drying even in cold temps. GET YOUR QUICK DRY TOWEL HERE!
An External Battery Pack
My external battery pack goes on every single trip with me! If you have been around for a while you’ve already heard me rave about it.
I love the larger size because it can charge multiple cameras and phones in one power-up. A definite necessity for me. GET YOUR POWER BANK HERE!
Foldable Day Pack
Besides your large backpack, you should also stash a tiny foldable day pack in your bag, too. This will be super helpful – and give your back a break – when you go on short side treks like Kala Patthar or the Ice Lake (both on the Annapurna Circuit.)
You’ll be thankful for a day carrying next to nothing, trust me! GET YOUR DAY PACK HERE!

8. Health & Hygiene Items For Your Nepal Trekking Essentials List
Multi day trekking in Nepal means you’ll need to carry most health and hygiene items with you as you go.
Though you should aim to pack light, here are some non-negotiable items that need to come with you in your pack. Whether for safety or comfort, don’t skimp on the impotant stuff?
If you’re wondering what to pack for trekking in Nepal in terms of health and hygiene, these need to be on your list.
Water Purification Tabs
You will 100% want to add water purification tablets to your Nepal trekking packing list. This way you can drink the free-flowing mountain water safely. Bonus, these small packets are super stash-able in your pack.
Additionally, on some treks, you can get water from the small villages you pass through. Purify everything to avoid any sickness on the trek. GET YOUR WATER PURIFICATION TABS HERE!
Pro Tip: The water purification tablets take roughly 30 minutes to work. That is partially why I recommend bringing two water bottles with you. One can be undergoing purification while the other is drinkable. But additionally, you should have two so that you’re constantly drinking enough water throughout the trekking days.
Double Walled Water Bottles
I brought this water bottle to Nepal and have never looked back. It is easily one of my new favorites because the double walled lining keeps drinks cold or hot – whichever you are going for.
I recommend purchasing this because of the built in straw so you can drink on the go. It’s tough to use the wide mouth bottles when hiking. Remember to grab two because of the water purification timing. GET YOUR WATER BOTTLES HERE!
Sun Bum Original SPF 30 Sunscreen
Sun Bum is one of my all-time favorites because it is eco friendly for both land and sea. I do recommend bringing your own from home because some of what I found in Nepal was expired.
Throw small tube or bottle into your pack so you can stay sunburn free. GET YOUR SUNSCREEN HERE!
Biodegradable Body Wipes
These biodegradable body wipes will keep you feeling fresh, even on the sweatiest of treks. These are perfect for trekking, camping, and outdoor hikes.
Soft and durable, these are made with aloe vera, tea tree oil and chamomile to deodorize and refresh. Your trail mates will thank you! GET YOUR WIPES HERE!
Compact First Aid Kit
This tiny first aid kit is filled with more than 100 useful items in case of an emergency. And, it takes up next to no room in your bag!
I recommend carrying this on all of your hikes, but you especially need to pack it for a Nepal trek. GET YOUR FIRST AID KIT HERE!
Electrolyte Tabs
I’m a huge fan of these electrolyte tabs for everything from hiking at home to trekking in Nepal. They will keep you feeling hydrated and ready to trek.
Simply drip a tab into your water bottle and get loads of extra electrolytes. GET YOUR TABLETS HERE!
Cough Drops or Candies
You are going to want to have something like cough drops on hand to combat the cold, dry air.
You might be fine with just peppermint candies, but I personally recommend Ricola (or similar) as they’ll benefit you for longer and suppress coughs. GET YOUR COUGH DROPS HERE.
Travel Tissues Multi-pack
Do not skimp on pre-packing travel tissues with you before your trek! A roll of toilet paper can cost up to 4$ up in the smaller villages.
Having these handy will give you peace of mind and save you money in the long run. GET YOUR TRAVEL TISSUES HERE!
Hand Lotion
Your hands will likely get dry and cracked on your trek. That is, unless you pack a nice hand lotion in your bag.
A small travel sized tube is perfect, you don’t need a lot. The Blueberry, Avocado and Coconut scents smell amazing! GET YOUR LOTION HERE!
9. Nepal Trekking Essentials List: Extras
These extras are things that you likely already have at home and should not go trekking without. But, no Nepal trekking trip will be complete without them.
So, I highly recommend that you add them to your Nepal trekking packing list.
- Deodorant. Need I say more? You will want this on your trek!
- Hand Sanitizer. You’ll want this before meals to clean the grime from your hands.
- Toothbrush and Toothpaste.
- Hair Ties, Comb, or Brush.
- Ear plugs for sleeping in noisy teahouses.
- Face Wipes are a great idea too, in my opinion.
- A good book or a Kindle.
- Trail mix, granola bars, etc. for when you need a quick snack.
Nepal Trekking Tips
- Pack your outfits wisely. You will not be able to do laundry while trekking in Nepal, aside from hand-washing small items like underwear and socks. Much of the clothing items listed above are less likely to trap odors.
- Don’t worry too much about being fashionable in the mountains. Worry more about having the right layers to keep you warm, because that will make or break your trip. If you do want your photos to have fun pops of color, choose accessories that are fun.
- Expect to wear a fresh pair of underwear each day, but that you may end up layering and reusing items like your tank top or leggings.
- Speak with your doctor before you leave home about taking any altitude sickness medications in Nepal, just in case you do find yourself sick.
A Note On Buying Trekking Gear in Nepal
You may be wondering if buying trekking gear in Nepal is an option. The answer is both yes and no.
When you land in Kathmandu, you’ll quickly see that the streets of Thamel are lined with shop after shop full of trekking gear.
Seriously, you will see one after another after another. Some of them have unbelievable prices, and some are not cheap at all.
You should be aware that a lot of the gear found in these shops is said to be knock-off gear. And, I did see evidence of this myself.
It can be hard to tell, because the logo will even be screen-printed onto the gear. But shop carefully.
Many of these items are low quality and will begin to fall apart before you get far on the trails. This can be devastating as you get up into colder sections of your trek.
I would caution you to bring as much as possible from home. This particularly applies to outerwear, backpacks, shoes, and sleeping bags.
Each of those items would really cause a problem if they fell apart before completig your trek.
Smaller items, like a t-shirt or a tank top are fine to buy when visiting Kathmandu if you prefer. Those will be layered with other clothing and you could even keep reusing one if you really needed.
Certain pharmacy goods like tissues, ibuprofen, and cough drops can be found in Kathmandu. But those are so easy to bring from home that that’s what I did.
Final Thoughts: Nepal Trekking Packing List
Going trekking in Nepal is truly an unforgettable experience.
The scenery is just gorgeous and hands down is one of the most memorable sights you’ll have in Nepal.
However, it can quickly go sideways if you don’t have the right gear.
Do yourself a favor and pack your Nepal trekking equipment wisely. The more prepared you are the better your experience will be.
