If you are wondering whether or not it is possible to visit Saudi Arabia as an American, the answer is yes! Here is exactly how to do it.
When I first got back from Saudi Arabia, I was met with many curious looks and lots of confusion. Not strictly because of my chosen destination – but rather, because there is a lot of confusion about whether or not it’s even possible to visit there!
If you are wondering, can Americans travel to Saudi Arabia? I am here to help you out! The answer is a decisive yes, and it is likely easier than you think.
I’ve been traveling the Gulf countries for over a decade, and here is everything you need to know about entering the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a tourist.
Saudi Arabia Visa Requirements for US Citizens
Saudi Arabia is a place that had been on my bucket list for years. Once completely closed-off to tourists, Saudi Arabia began welcoming tourists as recently as 2019 – only to once again close its borders during the global shutdown in 2020.
After missing my initial window of opportunity, I was determined to visit once they reopened (especially after seeing the unbelievable historical sites in AlUla, Saudi Arabia.) And thankfully, I’ve since had my chance.
Now, visitors from over 45 countries including the U.S. are able to visit Saudi Arabia on a tourist visa, and it is easier than ever with the introduction of an electronic visa or eVisa.
Here are your step-by-step instructions for the KSA application process.
Documents Required for U.S. Citizens
This guide will specifically focus on obtaining a tourist visa for Saudi Arabia as an American traveler.
Key requirements for U.S. citizens applying for a Saudi Arabian eVisa include:
- A passport valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry into Saudi Arabia.
- One recent passport-sized color photo with a white background.
- Payment of the visa fee.
- Typical additional information such as:
- Your personal details (full name, date of birth, address, etc.)
- Passport information (number, expiration date, nationality, and issuing country.)
- Travel plans (including dates of travel and accommodation details.)
- Proof of onward travel.
How to Apply for a Saudi Arabian eVisa
Applying for a Saudi Arabian visa as a U.S. citizen is quick and simple. The entire process can be completed online from your home country.
Here’s how to apply:
- Fill out the online application form: Answer the questions as asked, including your personal information, passport details, etc. The form takes only a few minutes to complete.
- Submit payment: This is done through the online system. You should expect your Saudi Arabia eVisa to cost around $131 USD, and it is valid for one full year.
- Wait for approval: After submission, your eVisa will typically be processed within 24 to 72 hours. However, some applications may take longer.
- Get your eVisa: Once approved, the eVisa will be emailed to you. Print a copy to present upon arrival in Saudi Arabia, along with your passport.
It is as simple as that!
Pro Tip: The eVisa fee also includes mandatory medical insurance for your stay, covering emergency cases up to 100,000 SAR (approximately $26,000). The insurance is assigned from several providers randomly, regardless of your nationality or age.
The new eVisa system is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a plan to modernize the country and attract more international visitors. In addition to the eVisa, Vision 2030 has also relaxed certain laws in Saudi Arabia, including reforms that make it easier to visit Saudi Arabia as a woman.
Visiting Saudi Arabia with a Visa on Arrival
I also want to share with you the process of visiting Saudi Arabia using the Visa on Arrival process. It was equally simple.
This option is available to travelers who meet certain criteria, such as traveling for tourism or business, and can be granted at major international airports like King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah or King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
To qualify for a visa on arrival, travelers must present a valid U.S. passport with at least six months of validity, a return ticket, and proof of accommodation in Saudi Arabia.
Pro Tip: Visa on arrival policies may vary depending on the type of travel and the traveler’s nationality, so it’s important to confirm eligibility before departure.
If you’re eligible, this option provides more flexibility for spontaneous travel to Saudi Arabia, allowing you to avoid the pre-application process. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check the latest entry requirements to ensure a smooth arrival.
I landed in Medinah’s International Airport in western Saudi Arabia. After deplaning, I was ushered to the immigration area.
Next, I had to enter information into an electronic kiosk (the same information that is asked for the eVisa process) and print out a small receipt of paper. This little receipt serves as your paper visa, and is electronically attached to your passport number.
You simply walk with your paper and your passport, and they will stamp you in. Proceed to baggage claim and you are free to exit the airport, ready to explore Saudi Arabia as an American tourist!
